Dr. Douglas Fisher

Dr. Douglas Fisher joined the Department of Educational Leadership in 2011 having served as Professor of Language and Literacy Education in the Department of Teacher Education at San Diego State University since 1998. In addition, he is a teacher and administrator at Health Sciences High & Middle College. He has served as a teacher, language development specialist, and administrator in public schools and non-profit organizations, including 8 years as the Director of Professional Development for the City Heights Collaborative, a time of increased student achievement in some of San Diego's urban schools.
 
He is the recipient of an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award, a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame, the Farmer award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, as well as a Christa McAuliffe award for excellence in teacher education. In 2011, his book Implementing RTI with English Learners, won the innovation award from the Academy of Educational Publishers.
 
Doug is a researcher who is interested in school improvement, especially in the area of quality instruction. Some of his many books are linked here:

Bryan Dean, an Oakland Schools' Consultant, recently presented at Harvard University on Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  Bryan talks about what UDL is, why it is a powerful approach, how  it relates the the Common Core, how it differs from differentiation and resources to know more about it.

Michigan ASCDMEMSPA, and Oakland Schools collaborated to bring John Hattie to  Oakland Schools for a Visible Learning Institute.  Hear a number of participants share their thinking on the latest research on effective teaching, the  implications of effect size, and what contributes to powerful student learning.

Vince Gigliotti was the Principal of Anderson Middle School in Berkley, Michigan. In 2014 he will be the Principal of Angell Elementary, also in Berkley. 

Vince shares his insights into the implementation of the workshop model at Anderson Middle School.  He is candid about this process, sharing reflections that will be helpful to any school considering such a move.

Richard Koch is a respected educator and leader in the area of portfolios and writing. He shares what portfolios are, how they support student learning and the teaching of writing, as well as helpful ideas on how to effectively use portfolios.


Richard is the Director of the Michigan Portfolios website. He is also the co-author of "The Portfolio Guidebook" and consults with educators in the area of teaching writing and writing assessment.

On May 12, 2014, the School Quality Department of Oakland Schools, will sponsor a day with Dr.  Mary Helen Immordino-Yang as part of the "National Speaker" series. Dr. Immordino-Yang is an internationally recognized cognitive and educational psychologist who studies the brain base of emotion, social interaction and culture and their implications for development and education.

In this podcast Dr. Immordino-Yang discusses her research linking neuroscience and education. She shares how cultural, social, and cognitive learning are interrelated.

Margaret Heritage is a world renowned researcher and author in the area of Formative Assessment. In this podcast, Margaret explains what Formative Assessment is, how it differs from benchmark and interim assessment, the research behind it and key points and understandings for teachers who use, or are beginning to use, the Formative Assessment process.
